There's really nothing wrong with using Syntec 5W30 when you consider that most dealerships still use 5W30 dino oil for schedualed maintanence. The Syntec 5W30 you have is far superior to any grp2 dino oil, but it still doesn't meet VW specs.
As the opening topic article mentions, you would gain more sheer stability(ie: higher resistance to oil breakdown) if you use 5W40 or the German-made 0W30. The VW specs also require oil mfgrs to blend thier oils with a higher tolerance to burn-off. Another thing that makes GC so special is its ability to neutralize acids for an extended period. Castrol really pulled out all of the stops when they designed the SLX/0W30 additive package. Its chemical composition really is unlike any other motor oil on the market.
