1.7s also had the 1.6 mark on the head. You'll find that there's a number on the back of the block. 1.6 says 1.6, diesel says 1.6D, 1.7 says H (except the VW 1.7s in Dodge Omnis, which say 1.7), 1.8 says 1.8, and 2.0 says 2.0.

ETKA has a full list of VW engine codes with HP figures, models the engine was used in and year ranges for each... all of them... ever. And Euro ETKA covers the european motors soo. Give me an engine code, I can tell you what it is, HP, and what it came in.
