no in mk1s the diesels and gassers had the same trannys accept for the gti and i think the rabbit s, the only difference is the clutch disc, but really i don't think that is even that important. and there really isn't that much torque only 70 ft lbs. haha. if you're going to use a different tranny though i would suggest a taller one like an fn, the fn's are nice because they also have a 20% diff, so it'd be easier to pull out in slippy conditions, my jetta is a pain in the ass to pull out with in the rain because it breaks loose too easy
