The supercharger only "gives up" if it isn't maintained properly. They need to be rebuilt, of at least have the belt changed, around every 70k miles.

VR swap would probably be the easiest, other than putting a turbo on the PG. The VR's put out about 170ish stock, and a VRT can do an easy 300+.

As far as AWD or RWD, AWD is easier. There is one front engine RWD VRT at this time and I know that he had to over come many hurdles. The AWD isn't as bad though, you need a syncro pan and drive line for that. If you look at vwvortex there is some good info on there.
