Default Assistance with installation of roof crossbars

I just purchased (on EBay) a set of cross bars for my roof rails on my 2001 Passat Wagon. Unfortunately, no installation instructions came with the bars. I have the bars, the keys, an allen wrench and what I believe is called a torque spanner.

I have figured out how to install the rails, but am wondering what I am supposed to do with the torque spanner. I imagine that is used to test the torque on the allen screw at the ends of the rails, though I do not know how to use this tool.

Does anyone have a set of instructions that you could scan and send along? If not, is anyone familiar with the installation and could guide me through with your description? I believe the part number is 3B0 071 151 009. It has the rubber top imbedded on the cross bars.

I will be carrying a canoe on these rails and want to make sure I have a correct installation.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
