Haha. General mechanics know nothing about VWs and hate them because European cars are different than American and Japanese cars, they are quirky and harder to work on. I don't think I've ever met a general auto mechanic who liked them. First off, it's not all about reliability, I'd rather drive a VW than a Civic becasue the pure driving experience is much better. Not to mention the fact that although some early Mk4's weren't reliable, you can't base your whole opinion (or your mechanics opinion, since you apparently don't think on your own) on 2-3 MY's.
