2180CC engine (bored and stroked), hot cam, headers / stinger exhaust, dual Weber's or DelOrtos, I'd run a .009 distributor but you said you hate points - so I guess modify one for a HAL sensor (out of another Bosch vehicle, perhaps?), Bosch blue or red coil - that'd pretty much take care of the engine.
Adjustable front beam (so you could rake / unrake at your pleasure)
Pair of seats out of a GTI
Vintage Hurst shifter
Widened steelies on the back
Stock steelies on the front
hot-rod black paint (flat black)

Build the engine right and you'll be able to give the ricerboys one heck of a run for their money.

(heh ... looks like I described a '64 on a late pan that I owned years ago!)
