ABA 2L from a MK3, preferable '93-95 since the wiring is easier and the throttle body on OBD2 motors is difficult to fit under the hood.
Generally, you can't break them, they have a lot more low end than the 1.8s, they're cheap (I've bought several complete ~130K mile MK3s wrecked for less than $250). Mods are pretty available. Everything from chips to supercharger (roots, centrifugal and screw chargers all available) and turbocharger kits.
