Default Oil in water/water in oil MK3

Seasons greetings, folks.

My daughter owns a '95 Seat Cordoba which, I believe, has mechanicals based on Golf Mk3.

Long story short, there is water in the auto transmission (fluid is a caramel/light brown colour) and also trans oil in the cooling system (substantial amount of light brown globs). I'd say that there is more oil in the cooling system than water in the trans)

I've drained the auto trans and also the cooling system with a view to flushing both.

What I can't figure out is how the oil/water ingress is taking place.

I've removed the trans oil cooler (sits on top of box) and it seems ok.

Is there anywhere else (other than internal transmission housing) where this can happen? If internal, where?
Is this a common problem on this model?
Is there a quick fix?

Seats/Golfs are uncommon in Australia so just getting info is difficult let alone getting parts etc.

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers...
