As an update I can confirm that there is no problem with fitting an aftermarket radiator type oil cooler to a Mk 3 (the Seat version, at least).

I recalled a customer's husband used to work on veedubs, audis etc so I emailed them xmas eve and asked about it. He responded today and confirmed that all will be ok.

The difficult part was working out how to connect the new 3/8" oil cooler hose to the existing threaded holes in the trans. I have a few different air/pipe fittings at home but the thread is not close to any of them.

I ended up cutting off the existing mounting "bolt" and silver soldered a brass 3/8" male air connector to it.

There's plenty of room to mount the oil cooler in front of the radiator so after I've flushed the trans a couple more times I'll finish the job.

Thanks to those who responded and I hope everyone enjoys the holidays.
