Default Distributor timing help please!

Hello Guys,
Im kinda new to VW's and just put a new head on a 8v from a 1987 Audi 4000. Im trying to get my timing down, i already set the crank and the valves, but im having trouble with the distributor. I have the timing belt off and cant get the rotor to budge in order to turn it to the 0 degree mark on the distributor. I looked in the manual i have and it said to make sure the oil pump shaft lug is paralell with the crank. The problem is i cant find the shaft let alone the lug, im assuming once i turn the lug it will disengage the gear so i can turn the rotor, just need advice on what to look for.
Any help would save me alot of frustration
Thanks
