Sort of an update. I put the VW on the lift again and tried vice grips on the stud. No effect (big surprise). So I decided to get some Irwin bolt extractors. I figure if these remove rounded off bolts, why can't the same concept be applied to studs?
I'll try the Irwin sockets this weekend. I'll let everybody know how it goes.
