My '88 Fox did a similar thing. It cut out on me twice on a 50 mile drive one day. It then ran fine for 4 more days. I went to work and it wouldn't start when I got off work. I had it towed home.
It turned out to be a corroded connection at the "hall sending unit". It is located on the passenger side under the dash right by the wall.
Can't hurt to check.
