I'm a new member here. So far, I have already found great answers for questions to the Golf I bought a few months ago.

Last week, my passenger engine fan lost 2 of the 3 screws holding it to the radiator. Smoke came from the engine. I saw that the spinning fan was rubbing against the plastic around it causing the smoke. I did a temporary fix until I got home where I installed all 3 screws. I wasn't sure if it caused any damage, so I kept testing the fan. I couldn't get it to spin by using the switches, etc. The fuses looked fine. Since then, the engine hasn't overheated.

Yesterday, I saw smoke under the hood again. This time, I observed the driver's side engine fan was smoking from the middle of the fan motor. I even took a video. In all my back yard mechanic experience, I've never seen that before. Of course I am guessing the worse. After watching lots of VW fan motor videos, I tried to test everything. In this link, I connected a wire between the high and low fan connectors as explained.

vw Golf mk4 fan switch check climatronic fan check guide - YouTube

I checked the fuses (in the dash and by the battery) and they look fine. I tested the connectors in this plug, which connects to the radiator. So far, both fans don't work. Maybe the 2 screws falling out, last week, caused both to go out. I turned on the AC and it doesn't get cold like it used to. After driving the engine for a while, both fans still won't turn on. Fortunately, the engine doesn't overheat.

At this point, I am guessing both fans are blown. Any other suggestions to test the fans and resolve this matter would be appreciated. Another video showed the fans removed and the motors were taken apart and cleaned. Of course, the factory sealed housing was no longer sealed and I have no idea how I would put it back together.

Thanks to everyone

I have built about 30 older air cooled bugs and used to race off road but never anything newer. I just got started so all I have ordered is eibach springs and sway bar. Looking at chips and intercoolers right now. Any suggestions? I love the car and look forward to building a killer little sleeper

Hey everyone,

I just bought an MKlV Gli last week, went from honda to vw lol
The guy who sold it to me was upfront about two things that were wrong with the car, was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on them:

The fog lights don't work, I got yellow led bulbs for them but nothing, neither with the stock bulbs, checked the fuses but zero. Any thoughts? driving me crazy.

The only other thing was the sunroof, it will go and and down but it will not open horizontally, it tries but it fails (try i mean it moves like 2mm then goes back), this i have no clue on since my civic did not have a sunroof.

I've started doing small mods here and there, ordered an AEM cold air, a TT short shifter from ECS tuning, metal bushings from 42draftdesigns, a front strut and alrdy put a deep exhaust on it (not the super loud ones).
Anyone have any suggestions on what other small mods i could make?
Also planning on getting a Forge 007 DV for it.

For the future I'm planning on getting drilled rotors and upgrade the bushings to the R32/TT ones. if anyone could explain how REVO works that wouldbe awesome, first time having turbo on a car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

This is the first vw that I have owned and did a good amount of research. I'm coming from a 2006 Cobalt ls 2.2 that was needing constant repairs. So I did a lot of looking....Audi,BMW,Saab,Cadillac,Toyota, then I came across an ad that described to a T what I was looking for. And thats fuel economy, power, space to haul my kids and wife comfortably, safety, and reliability. The individual whom I bought this from had EVERY service record from when he bought it new,and also in a steno pad what he did date/mileage(Example: 6/1/12-checked oil level, checked tires-101,143 miles). His records are meticulous, and the car is in perfect condition. The car had a cam chain bolt(?) break off and the engine was done,so he had the dealership replace the motor at around 80,000, the car now has 119,000 and seems to run flawlessly. Its a 2007 Passat Wagon 2.0t with the 6 speed auto trans. He also gave me a case of amsoil 5w40 and a case of Mann oil filters for future use. I havent noticed a single issue with this car and hope I never do. But if the time arrises for repairs I am well versed in wrenching. One thing though.....how the heck do you get to the air filter? It seemed to just pop off on the one side of the cover but the other side must be bolted on somehow,I didnt spend a lot of time investigating but i'd like to replace it with a k&n drop in. Well I assume you guys have a wealth of knowledge and can't wait to learn German.

for the last week my car has been stalling in the middle of running perfectly well...and then refuses to start.
sometimes, it just doesn't start...and then if i try little later it starts like nothing happened.
i took it to the VW dealership for diagnosis and they told me to fix the foll:
- N80 PURGE VALVE AND GAS CAP AND ENGINE SPEED SENSOR
- TIMING BELT PKG WITH WATER PUMP
they quoted me $1500...thats more than i can afford considering my car is over 100K miles and the current value does not justify this high expense.

please advise anyone.
thank you
