suspension help

Hi All. Looking for some help...
I picked up an 87 GTI 16V that is in need of a suspension. I want to keep it as stock as possible and was looking to get feedback on what components I should go with. Also some help on where to get the bushings for the sway bars would help as well.

My son and I are changing out the shift linkage this weekend (really worn!) and the suspension is next on the list..

Thanks!

Hello all, i just wanted to introduce myself as a NEW member and also as a NEW JETTA owner. I have recently purchased a 1989 VW Jetta GLI. As a previous E30 BMW owner i was a little sketchy about trading in my 2.5L inline 6 for a smaller, less torquey 1.8, but after the first test drive was greatly impressed and after getting my newly acquired jetta back to my house where i could dig deeper into its internal workings, and later yet at the local auto repair facility that i work, where i was more apt to look even further into the workings of this beast did i realize that this was like looking at something outer worldly. I must say that while this is all very impressive to me, there is lots i need to learn before i can truly understand how to properly diagnose and repair this beast. and trust me when i say, there is alot to fix. many small things that not need immediate attention, and some larger items that should be fixed as soon as possible.
I thank everyone here in advance for the help and knowledge i know i will receive, and can only hope that i will someday be able to repay the favor with the next newcomer.
On a side note, i chose this VW forum over all the rest because it is the most user friendly, and the closest to the one i am familiar with at Bimmerforums.com
I look forward to meeting new friends and enhancing my VW diagnostic skills with you all. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Hi,
I am now the proud owner of a 87 GTI 16V, that has about 110K on it. The car was taken car of, and the owner told me he changed the Timing Belt and Water pump at 53K.. Only issue is that was in 1995.. should I be looking to change it again?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Help with timing belt!

Need some help with timing this thing. Its a 1989 VW Jetta 1.8 liter single overhead cam.

I put a new timing belt on, but had a little problem getting the crank bolt loose. In the process I broke the old belt and the intermediate shaft, which drives the distributor, moved, and the cam may have moved as well. It is an interference engine, so I carefully turned the crank and/or the cam until the TDC mark, the cam mark, the crank and intermediate shaft were all lined up. I put the new belt on and found out that when the timing marks are all lined up as the manual (Haynes) says, number 1 piston is at TDC, but on the exhaust stroke. Oops!
Well, I'm afraid to crank it over more and bend a valve. So if I just reset the distributor to point to #4, will it run ok? Or should I take the belt off and wrench the crank around twice? The problem is I don't think the timing marks will be lined up if I turn it over twice. What to do?

Thanks so much for any help!

Thanks, Casey
