Guys, my car has 206K on it. Tranny seems fine, but every now and then it jumps out of 5th gear. I'd be cruising at about 60mph, lightly on the gas pedal. Any ideas? Linkage seems pretty good.

Thanks

helping a good friend rebuild an engine out of a 1.9 TD jetta...AZZ or AAZ is the engine code i believe. not too familiar with VW myself, so i'm just trying to grab all the info i can.

firstly, is there anything i should be on the lookout for wearing out? btw. the trans is NOT an issue it is being replaced. shaft bearing grenaded in the old one lol.

secondly and most importantly - i've been measuring bearing clearances for this friend as the engine history is unknown. i figure its much better to give them a simple check with plastigauge before we go through all the work of transplanting this engine.

according to someone my friend knows the bolts on the crank mains cannot be reused or retorqued....i have found no indication of this in my service manual (it is a haynes however...bleh) and for the size of the bolts the torque appears to be well below the yield strength of the bolts. so is there any truth to this?? can the bolts be reused if they are in good shape?

thanks for helping out a noob guys!

MKIII Timing Belt and full water pump page. (http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/t-belt/index.htm)
this guide is exelent i was given it off another user off here and its done me proud
it would be nice to see if the mod or manager would put this as a sticky for every one who ever posts timing problems
wether it be hall effect sensor faults cam position sensor faults and the 5000 rpm limmiter
9/10 times its the timing as not many mechs know the timing guide and do it the old school way <tdc ,rocking 1&4 dizzy pointing at 1 or 4 cylinder> it works just has the 5k limmiter and the other related timing issuse mentioned above
the guide shows air con <not all of us have air con shown in this guide but i live in the uk so i dont need it lol>
thanks guys

another vibe question

I have '99 Jetta VR6, 5spd, with 110K miles.

I get vibration in the front end that is felt through the steering wheel, shift knob, and a little bit in the floor at around 55 - 65 mph.

I only get the vibe when the engine is under load. It's more pronounced during acceleration, less but still persistent maintaining 55-65mph, and more pronounced if maintaining speed up a hill.

I can get the vibration under heavy load at lower speed (say 45), but the vibration seems to stop during cornering with heavy acceleration (gunning it on a sharp turning on-ramp).

No squeaks, rattles, or grinding.

coasting at any speed = no vibration.

The rims are not stock, but the tires are new, re balancing and rotating does not help.
The axles were replaced. no help.
Checked the dogbone (tranny mount). Looks great to me.

engine mounts?
springs?
shocks?
CV joint? inner/outer?

I would like to know how to pinpoint it without shotguning parts.

thanks,
Jeff

so i need some help finding out why my car keeps blowing a fuse/fuses. the local vw shop replaced the fuse or fuses last time so im not sure witch ones blew. but when it did blow again the power windows stoped working, the heated seats quit and i have no reverse lights. so since i only have 15 hours of work this week i decided to tackle this nightmare.

so does anyone have a wiring diagram for these?
any ideas of what would be causing this?
how are they tied together?

i am having no luck finding out the proper name of this part. it is a bit tough to see in the pic. my problem is that i need to get the gasket that goes between the right end of the cylinder head and this housing. there are two sensors and a large coolant hose coming directly from the radiator connected to it.
