1974 shifter problems

My father and I are restoring a 1974 super beetle.
We bought a new angled shifter from Jbugs, and it's got a post on it, where the original shifter didn't have one.
Also, there's no place in the top of the shift rod for the post to go into.
Should we just shave the post off, or try to send it back?

Dash questions

Good afternoon people! I've been driving around a 1969 standard beetle that I bought to fix up for my wife. Its starting to get cold so I decided I better find out what the story is with the defrost set up. Lots of cold air blowing in there. Turns out that the vents aren't hooked up. Took it apart to see where the hoses went, and it turns out that the center vent had fallen out of the dash. Also the passengerside one. Drivers side vent was gone completely. So here's my question. VW suppliers catalogs offer vent parts for padded dash only. This car just has a metal dash that's painted to match the car, no padding. Was padding an option? Was the padding removed on this car? It doesn't look like it ever had any. The vents that go into the dash that the hoses hook to aren't available any way apparently, so I guess it'll be junkyard city to get the one I'm missing.

Fuel in oil...Again!!

I recently picked up a very clean, stock 72 Beetle from a family member (original owner!). The car sat for about six months before I brought it home so the first thing I did was change the oil. I noticed there was a strong fuel smell in the oil (plus more volume than 2.5 qts. in the case!). After talking with a friend, we suspected the fuel pump. I replaced it (making sure to get a pump for a 'generator' block). After oil change, I left the car sitting in the drive several days, went to start it and noticed the fuel level was lower than when I parked it:confused: I checked the dipstick and noticed the fuel smell was back! Does anyone know of another cause to this problem??? Help!

71 super beetle choke

I can't find any info on adjusting the choke on my 71 SB with the 34pict-3 carburetor. The chokle closes okay, but takes too long to open up after a cold engine start, thus making the car run on a too rich, mixture for a few miles.

I don't see any adjustment on the electric gizmo on the right side of the carb that controls the opening and closing of the choke plate.
