Default 2000 Golf w/rebuilt...what would you pay?

For arguements sake I'm probably not going to do it but curiosity has gotten the better of me and I'd like to ask the people that would know.

I'm looking at the possibility of purchasing a 2000 Golf 2.0 that had an unfortunate collision with a deer in 2007. At that time the damage was estimated to be too costly by the insurance company and deemed a total loss. It has since been rebuilt. From what I can see the damage was to the front drivers side and although the carfax reports frame damage after a test drive all seems to be repaired. The 2 owners since the accident have put roughly 30,000 additional miles on the vehicle and it has been serviced by VW dealerships 2 times since the accident. Nothing in relation to the accident has been noted in service reports. The belts have been recently changed and the cam sensor needs replacing but other than that it drives very well. It currently has 98,000 miles on it and it was at roughly 69,000 when the accident occured.

Would you think about or not and if you would, what would you pay? It's a base model with automatic. Thanks for any input.

Fixed correctly the wreck won't matter until you want full coverage insurance ,try to resell it or if it gets hit and the Ins. Co. only wants to pay diminished values. Not much value if it is an automatic. Vws big rip off joke of "you never need to change the ATF fluid and filter" insured the second owner needed a rebuild at 40-80k. It was usually the second owner since the first was tired of his/her rental having more miles on it than their VW. Almost every part of the emssions, cooling system or fuel system fails at regular intervals about 12-14 months with amazing regularity.

He stated it is a salvage car. No matter how nicely repaired they are, the value drops dramatically. If it is a cool weather car it is right at the mileage most unmaintained VW 4 speed automatic transaxles go bad. $2000 would be more reasonable. Clean 03 and 04 1.8t Jettas are going through the auction needing a valve job and timing belt for $2500.

Yeah, I dont disagree with what you are saying. KBB has (depending on the condition) between 4k and 5k. So what I meant is something definitely less than that price (because it was rebuilt).

Now I understand your definetely means DEFINITELY. I just wanted him to know that no matter what the blue book is these were horrible cars from day one with the check engine light on constantly during the warranty period. VW took advantage of the emissions laws to do some serious profit taking on unsuspecting loyal customers.
