DO they have steering wheels on the opposite side in germany...i think they do...and if so thats always a problem i dont think you can pass american inspection with the opposite side steering wheel which is going to end up costing a lot to change no 100 percent surewhat the deal is.

You can get what ever you want in the U.S. Just depends on how much you want to pay. If you want a hot pink TDI lupo putting out 1000hp and a supermodel in passenger seat I am sure somebody in the U.S. is willing to take your money and help realise your dream

If you're looking at an old Polo it's more possible. If the car is over 25 years old bringing it in is no problem. (15 years in Canada). As far as the new ones. Getting it in from Mexico saves you the shipping. The lady at the license place here said if I bring a slip with country of origin and the car is brand new she'd give me plates and a title. She didn't know the rules, and I can take advantage of it.

The problem is with the impact standard, and that nothing exists that is essentially the same car in the US. I don't know if the car is OBD2 (which is has to be). You'll find that getting it licensed will be easy (at least in states without inspection), but getting in insured will be a pain. The licensing system in WA is stupid, they don't know anything. They got the VIN wrong on my car, gave me plates and a title for a VIN that didn't exist. My insurance company figured it out, because they pay attention.

Just for future info, German steering wheels are on the left, UK on the right. German speedos are KPH, UK are MPH. Most cars over there don't have door bars. Some didn't have O2 sensors, the headlights and windows aren't US road legal, as well as some other stuff.

There's a Polo in the US, as well as a Sharan. There's also 4 Audi A3s. Importing something that already exists here is a little easier. Say a Rallye or Syncro Golf. Or maybe a MK1 Golf (just call it a Rabbit when it gets here).

But yeah... if you have the money to spend, you can get anything into the US. I'll be bringing a Lupo in as soon as I have the money to buy something that isn't a MK1, which should be a while. And maybe an old Audi 50 (MK1 Polo with Audi badges) one day.. way down the road.

I think it's funny that VWs cheapest car is $16,000, and they make a $100,000 car now while everyone I know is trying to figure out how to get the cheap little cars they have in europe here.

I can lay claim to working on what I think is the only VW Sharan minivan in the US....it belongs to a French Ambassador, and I worked on it multiple times when I was employed in Jersey City at the VW dealer there. Its wierd, to say the least. Its a combination of efforts between VW and *gasp* Ford!

This particular Sharan has a 2.0 NON-Crossflow engine! It also has a 5 speed. Everytime we wanted to get parts for it, we would have to call the manager at the North American Region Distribution Center (NARDC) and fax them over the info regarding to the car's legality in the country before they would get any parts from Europe for it. But sure enough, they did, and I replaced the Spare tire cable crank on that van. Ha!

The lupo is a hot car. you know you would get much attention at shows if you roll up in one. And a side note: for all who don't know...Ford is the parent company for Volvo. So not all "Fords" are bad...haha.

Give it time, Ford will seep into Volvo, and they will turn into dressed up Taureses like the Jaguar x-type.

Default Polo/Lupo in the US

Warning: The following is a rant. I just had to get this off of my chest.

I would love to see VWoA bring the Polo or Lupo to this country. The improved fuel economy alone would keep these cars flying off of the dealers lots. There are some issues with emmisions & crash standards that would have to be solved. But those aren't really major obstacles to a company like VW. And if you think about it, either of these vehicles would keep Volkswagen true to its name....the "people's car".
But. alas, it just ain't gonna happen. VWoA has itself bent on becoming a luxury car company. You would think they would have learned thier lesson with the downfall of the W8 Passat. Instead, they're continuing to move upmarket. They're already having problems selling $90k Phaetons, mostly because of a silly name affiliation. The Touareg V10 TDI (about $60k) is due out soon. When the Microbus comes out in 2006, it will probably have the highest base-model price of any minivan.
Quite frankly, I don't know what it will take to wake up VW from the luxury pipe-dream. I think they need to get back to their roots and start importing common sense cars that the "people" can afford.

I hear ya. It's a shame that the toyota pruis gets so much attention when the lupo gti gets better gas mileage and even the non hybrid lupos get as good of gas mileage as the prius. When will VW wake up and figure out that not everyone in america wants an suv that they will never use for anything but a minivan.
