Ensure you follow service interval for DSG Tranny
Just a heads-up for anyone thinking they can save a few $$ by not performing the DSG transmission service at the VW recommended 40k interval; you are potentially destroying the tranny! Here is the scenerio for the DSG in our pre-owned '06 MK V Jetta TDI we purchased with 82k on the ODO:
- purchased from multi-line used dealer and had all major services showing as "completed" when checking VIN with the local VW dealer
- had some minor tranny noise after our local VW dealer completed a routine service and repaired malfunctioning intake port; they ran the VIN a 2nd time and called VW of N. America to discover that the DSG had NOT had recommended services yet (with 82k on the ODO it should have had 2 tranny services so far)
- sent the car back to original dealer; thanks to the "lemon law" in MA where we purchased the dealer ended up paying more than 3400.00 to repair the damage (flywheel and clutch plates had to be replaced).
- transmission repair shop and VW dealer both agreed the root of all the problems was not having the services on the DSG at 40k intervals; the tranny fluid deteriorated thus causing the flywheel and clutch pack problems.
It's been more than 4k miles since the DSG tranny work (we got a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty from the repair shop for free) and there have been no problems. Great shifts in all the positions (sport, tiptronic and normal Drive).
So word of advice when maintaining your VW or Audi with the DSG transmission is to ensure you follow the service interval of 40k miles; so plan on spending approx 400.00 on the service which conveniently needs to be completed just after your original 3/36 warranty expires.
Also, if you plan on purchasing a used VW or Audi with the DSG transmission ensure you can verify the service intervals were met (your local dealer can check the VIN for the service history); if service cannot be verified be aware that a "VW spec" rebuilt DSG bought through the dealer will cost you approx 5500.00 USD (with core exchange) and repairs can cost upwards of 3000.00 or more thanks to the "mega-tronics" unit on the DSG transmissions.
Hope this warning helps.
