Default potential vw owner

I found an 04 Jetta GLI 1.8t 6spd at a local dealership asking $15,977. It's got 44,000 on the clock and it's the grey metallic exterior with charcoal interior. I'm in the market for a sporty 4 door and I'm really considering going in on it because it's a beautiful car in prime condition and it seems like a really good deal. Does that price seem kind of low?

Now...being mainly a Lexus guy I don't really know a whole lot about VWs.
What are some specific problems to look for before buying? (jetta specific)
Any major recalls?
Reliable?
Basically, I just want to cover my bases before spending 15gs. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Hell of a choice, you know that would be commin from a guy who loves VW, the price seems fair, but you know its negotiable you could bring it down somewhat.
The only recall problem that i would know about in a jetta would be the power windows. But i had a 99.5 jetta haven't heard any problems with the 1.8t.

Goold luck....I would go for it.

if the car is certified preowned the dealer is supposed to have fixed any recalls on the car. the window clips would have been covered. thats if the 2005 even had an issue with those clips. there may be other recalls or service bulletins, but as stated, cpo means they are all better now. sounds like a really good price. got my 02 1.8t(similar miles) for 13,2 or something. 15 for a gli is pretty good, at least to me. guess i should get some clarification. is this local dealership a vw place, and is the car even cpo??

A cpo GLI for under $16 grand?? Holy crap that's a great deal. Buy it now. Usually that would be over $20k.

Yeah thats one other thing...CPO would mean that the car is taken care of and in good condition. But the deal is a good one no doubt about that. Also i dont' belive that the GLI's had a problem with the window clips. And i don't belive that the sensors and all that were an issue either.

Yeah most of those issues were taken care of by 2004.5
