Default Silicon on rubber bushings or not

Ok all,

What is te final word on prolonging the rubber bushings in suspension. I have been told both that silicon is good because it keeps rubber suspension, and even window moldings moist and stops them from dry rotting, but that the chemicals in the spray cans breakdown the ruberized materials. Does anyone know if I should use this, or of another product that will keep the bushings and dampers protected?
Thanks
-Ed
