Default Type 3 Brakes

Hi all,

I'm new to VWs, but I picked up a rail buggy last week and need a little help. The left rear brake drum is worn out and I need to replace it. The best we can tell, it has type 3 drums, which were apparently from '61-'64, but I'm having trouble finding some. When I got to regular parts stores (Autozone, Advance, etc), they only list Beetles, Karmann Ghia (1.2L), and Transporters (Buses?) for those years. Is the type 3 something different altogether? And where might I find one of these drums? Thanks!! - Josh

Thanks for the reply! I don't have the old part number. Is it printed on the drum somwhere? There were a few numbers, but I didn't realize they were actual VW P/Ns. It's the 5 lug pattern. Did all of the 5lug drums use the 45mm shoes? Or did some use the 41? I'm trying to hone in on exactly what I have and what cars it matches.

The original VW part # would be like 311 501 615 F This # is for 64-65 type 3 rear drum. It would be on the inside of drum. All models of VW's used different sized shoes. Do you have a chassis # Is this on a VW pan

There's no part number on the drum. Might be a non-OEM replacement. The buggy was basically built ground up, so there are no chassis numbers to reference. The guy in town asked to see the shoes to help him match it up, so I'm going to run them over there today. Whatever particular brake it ends up being, do you have a good source for these parts? I don't really know where to look, having never had a vw before. Thanks!

source depends on what you have. You will probably need to go to an air cooled site.
Shoes and wheel cylinders won't be to hard to find but the rear drum for an early type 3?
The rear shes are almost the same size as a super so don't be fooled.
Bill and Steve's is the only place I know that specialize in type 3. I guess do a search. I did but hardly any early stuff. Or try the classified on the samba
Might be cheaper to put a disc brake conversion on it!
