volkswagon golf hesitation on acceleration

I have a 2001 golf with 1.8l turbo automatic. When you accelerate normally from a stand still it hesitates and then accels normal. ON hard accel it does fine. No hesitations at any rpm or speed other than on a normal take off. Any suggestions on what to look at first?
