My 93 Passat has about 230,000 miles on it, still has the original starter and I just replaced the alternator. With starters you can have a voltage drop test done which will tell you the condition. Most auto parts stores can perform that test. With the alternator, if it is a Bosch they have an exceptionally long life span and generally if they give you trouble it is the regulator that is bolted to the back and cost about thirty dollars. One tip with the regulator, buy a Bosch regulator, you may have to order it on line, but it is worth the wait and the cost is about the same. Remember with both the starting system and charging system, cable/wire condition is key, loose, corroded or cheap cables will give you trouble and may even lead to misdiagnosis. Hope that helps......
