Default 1984 rabbit: true GTI?

alright, lets just start off by saying I do not know anything about VW's. I was actually looking for a subaru but came accrossed a rabbit convertable with GTI front end lowered with new 16's for $500. He says its not a GTI just the front end, but the car also has GTI on the dash and steeringwheel. The title just says 1.8L and his son says its the 1.8L GTI. Any way to tell by the motor if it is a GTI or not?

Look on the engine block for a code between the #2 and #3 spark plugs. If you see a "JH" you've got the 1.8. If you see "EN", "WT", or "JF" you have a much less powerful 1.7 liter motor.

There are also 2 1.8l engines to choose from, one H.O (8v GTI) and one regular (8v boat anchor). I forget how to tell the difference, it's been a while since I have owned a mk1 or mk2.

in mk2 cars, the 'pf' is the 1.8l 105hp model and not that it matters but the 9a is the 16v. hehe, 105 sounds lame, but they move.

here is some pictures, sorry it took me too long. i recently got it running, got the head torqued, changed oil, put new coolant in, new oil filter then i drove it for a few mins. and then let it idle for about 10 mins. then watery oil shot from behind the block but the oil is still clear and coolant is full, someone told me either a freeze plug or oil sending unit? any suggestions?

there is no oil sender on the back of the block. check your hoses, sometimes you get a pin hole in them, also did you buy new head bolts
