Default 83 Rabbit info

Hey guys, I got a 83 rabbit conv. What motor is in this car? I know nothing about VW except I do know this motor is blown.

I need to buy a rebuilt motor, but I dont know where to look or what im looking for. I prolly need a new clutch too.

I need some MK1 love here.

No point in rebuilding that motor. You can buy a 2.0 xflow (ABA) motor for ~ 200$ running. Things should bolt up almost perfectly.

Aaron, chime in.

1.7 litres of fun!

Depending on your budget, skillset, and willingness...a rebuild is an option, but a swap might be more benficial. Whether it be a 1.8, 1.8t, 2.0, or VR6.

2.0 sounds great.

My skillset has never let me down. Im not a mechanic, dont claim to be. Im just a computer guy that when something needs done, I get the info and learn how to do it myself.

Where do I go to get an engine like this?

Where are you located?
I have a complete 8v 2.0 (ABA), and 16v 2.0 (9A) sitting in my garage...and Lord knows I'll never get to them at this rate.

if you want to keep the stock fuel injection i would buy a 2.0 aba bottom end and put your old head on it bolt it in and call it good. theres a few little things that need to be done for this swap, but for the most part it's simple

On vortex, in the DYI/FAQ thread in the mk1 section there is all the swap info you would ever need.

I guess I didnt read it was an MK1. Your best bet is going with a 1.8l 16 or the 2.0l 16v. Great reliable motors you can score for under 3-400$
