'84 wolfsburg edition engine ?s

Hi all, newbie with some questions. Have a '84 Volks Rabbit Wolfsburg edition. Decided to rebuild the engine since it has almost 300,000 on it and never been touched. It is just my everyday car and I love it. I have assumed all along it has a 1.7 F.I. engine. Have been looking, was going to replace all internals. I can't find anyone who has new pistons or rings of .010 or higher since I had planned on cleaning up the block. I also have a really nice 1.8 head and am told it would fit on the 1.7 block. The only pistons I can find are 1.8 with the same stroke but a .060 larger bore. Anyone know where I can find some oversized 1.7 or any insight? Do I need to abandon the 1.7 in lieu of the 1.8 block which I have access to?
