Default 'bout a million questions

Hi folks. I have a '84 US GTi which I have had for about 8 yrs. Head blew up about 4 yrs. ago, been parked ever since. Anyway, car's been sitting a long time, and I have a lot on my plate already.

-- I want to know what would be a good junkyard motor to slap in there hurry-up-quick. Something normally aspirated, 2.0 maybe.

--Also, I heard there was a big valve 8-valve head, but I don't know the code or what it came in.

--Curious about Porsche 924 turbo motor, but with sidedraft Webers. (crossflow head) Would it fit? There used to be one in the local boneyard... Would the slick lower a-arms fit?

--Tranny. Will the later cable linkage types (A2, A3, etc.) bolt in?

--what's it worth? Florida car, not rusty or wrecked. Pics soon.

--An ABA 2L bottom end would be a great swap with a counterflow head. Plentiful, cheap and powerful.

--Big valve 8v heads came in GLIs and GTIs. In other words, you have one. Yours is a solid lifter version. In MK2s they were all hydraulic lifters, which I tend to like better for all but the most hardcore of 8vs.

--No. The only thing VWish about it is that it uses an Audi 5cyl bellhousing pattern. It would bolt into a RHD Jeep mail truck (the ones you see as icecream trucks now. They used a 924 motor, Dodge trans, Ford starter, Jeep body... wtf), but not a VW. (OK, maybe a Fox with an Audi 5000 trans). The control arms are physically the same dimensions. The bushings are different so you'll have to mod the mounts, particularly if you're speaking of the 944 Non-Turbo Aluminum ones.

--Cable linkage 4cyl gearboxes came in Passats, Corrados and MK4s with 4cyls. They wont 'bolt in', but many people have made them work. It's not really easy and it's not really worth the trouble until about 225-250hp. Your car should have a 4K in it, the most ruthless of the linkage shift trannies.

--On my side of the country, not running but whole and solid in good shape it would bring between $600 and $750.

Thanks, Aaron.

A little out of the loop. When you say ABA bottom end, to what do you refer? The 2L that come in just about everything newer? And 'counterflow' head? What head code, what models? I remember seeing a chart of all the vw/audi head codes and specs somewhere, but can't find it now.

My tranny's a lil rough, shot synchros. Did they only start the cable linkages in Mk4's?

I loved driving my rabbit. The way that thing could slam a turn was like magic. I tried driving my girlfriend's 2001 GTi VR6 like I used to drive my rabbit. Now she won't speak, just rocks back and forth and mumbles with her eyes shut. I think it's her ECU.

Yeah, the ABA was the 2L used in the MK3 chassis. The counterflow head was anything early with the intake and exhaust manifold on the same side. I've never had any success with head codes. I just look at them.

Cable trannies came in the above listed cars with 4cyls and everything with a VR6 ot TDI.
