Default Can you drop a 1.6 diesel engine into a gas Caddy?

Basically, the subject is the question. I have no idea if they made gas Caddies, or if the motor mounts or transmission mounts are different. Has anyone done this before? I've got an extra 1.6 D engine that came with my old Rabbit. I would like to rebuild it and find a suitable "parts car" to drop it into. Ideally, this would be a Caddy, but I'd have better luck finding one if I knew I could use both diesel or gas models as the base.

Can you just leave the old tranny in place and drop the diesel block in? Thanks for any help!

yeah it will work, theres a few things that go along with the gas to diesel swap, but nothing that isn't easily over came. the mounts are all the same, and you can use the same transmission, but it's easier to remove the engine and tranny as one unit

no in mk1s the diesels and gassers had the same trannys accept for the gti and i think the rabbit s, the only difference is the clutch disc, but really i don't think that is even that important. and there really isn't that much torque only 70 ft lbs. haha. if you're going to use a different tranny though i would suggest a taller one like an fn, the fn's are nice because they also have a 20% diff, so it'd be easier to pull out in slippy conditions, my jetta is a pain in the ass to pull out with in the rain because it breaks loose too easy

It's a great swap. This is what it looks like completed. And it's worth every penny. This winter, I'm changing the 1.6 to a 1.9

Yes, that's a stock Bosch. The engine/tranny are from a 1984 Jetta. The engine is mechanical lifter and will soon be replaced by an AAZ 1.9TD.

Valve cover is from a G60 (powdercoated), IP and turbo(Garrett T3) are stock, though the downpipe is a custom 2.5" ceramicoated Passenger Performance unit.
