Default Compression test, hand cranked - can it be done?

I've got the engine up on a stand now. Before I dive into a complicated rebuild that requires specialized tools, I figured I'd test the compression. Can this be done by handcranking the crankshaft with a socket? I don't see why it wouldn't work, but can't find anything written about it online.

Thanks, as always.

No reason it shouldn't work - it'd be easier if you still had the bellhousing / starter attached (just apply 12V) - you might need an extension on the wrench handle - but for one cylinder at a time - sure - why not?

I don't think it will cut it. You need some piston speed to get ring seal and with the 350+psi you'll be seeing you might be hard pressed to spin a wrench with any gusto. You're welcome to try though.

If it were me I'd bolt a flywheel, trans and starter in place and spin it over on the shop floor... done it before.

Yeah, from what I've heard at auto parts stores around town, it can't be done by hand cranking. So...that's a pain. I don't have the means to hook it up to a starter or tranny. I guess I'll just take it apart then!

Another

The year of the vehicle that this engine sat in is unknown. The only info I can find in the Bentley manual requires the VIN, which is obviously missing. There are some numbers on the block and head. Can these be used to determine engine age?

- chuck an impact wrench onto the front crank bolt and use that to rotate the engine -

yeah - but I forget the translation - you should be able to find something on the web or call a friendly dealership - they should be able to tell you what you've got -
