Default Electrical Issue (headlight/horn/blower fan??) '82 Pickup

Hi...

Newbie owner syndrome!

I bought an '82 Diesel Pickup yesterday... Everything worked when I picked it up...

I replaced the air and fuel filters today, as it's been sitting over a year... Was GOING to replace the headlights, (with H4 replacements) when I noticed they WERE NOT WORKING! (I know they worked yesterday, I drove at night) Then noticed the horn doesn't work..

Now-- Here's the list of things I've identified...

1) Horn doesn't work, but I hear the relay click.
2) Dome light working with 'turn' of headlght switch. It's daylight out, so I can't identify the gauge lighting.
3) With the "dimmer" switch, the lights WILL come on, with or without the headlight switch on (flash to pass-- read normal, right?).. However (this is spooky to me) with the engine running, or not, the blower fan will come on, if the headlight switch is ON, when I pull the dimmer... Yes, I've checked this several times...

I'm HOPING this is a relay failure-- that they all share... I tried replacing the horn relay, but it didn't change anything.. I've checked the fuses systematically-- no blown ones..

HELP!! I'd like to drive my truck to work tonight-- but can't without headlights!!

All help appreciated..

AJ RN

Yup-- n00bie owner!!!

Headlight problem-->ME.

Didn't realize it was a "KEY ON" Headlight Switch-- but the parking lights will work, even IF the key is off...

I've also found out, there are two fuses to the horn-- one for the switch side of the relay-- one for the power to the horn..

Still don't get the blower fan deal-- that'll have to get sorted out eventually.. I

f anyone has thoughts on THAT one-- lemme know! Oh well-- I'll have a 'spare' relay for the glow plugs-- it's the same part as the horn relay! I'm in NW Ohio-- so that's probably NOT a bad idea, anyway!

Hi there, also a proud newbie of a Diesel, a 1980 2 dr. I bought it from a freind last week and immediately had some electrical problems with the blower motor and the wipers. What I found is that there was no power getting to it at the fuse box. I have heard that this is a common problem. My temporary fix was to solder a jumper from a working fuse connecton to the connections on the wiper fuse and the blower fuse. I soldered across the top because I believe it is where the power is comming from, that way they are still being protected by the fuses. I also had this problem with the right side headlight and fixed it by soldering a jumper from the left one. I understand that this will be temporary only until I can replace the whole fuse box.

I did the same thing with the headlights, it took me forever to realize that they won't come on with the car not running. In my oppinion that is how all cars should work.
