I have a '79 fi rabbit and its having trouble starting. I'd say about 50% of the time it starts and runs just fine. The other part of the time it will just keep acting like its going to start but it will never turn over. For minutes it will just almost crank but wont get there. If I get a running start and pop the clutch it will start, but as soon as I hit the brake and start slowing down it stalls. Theres a new fuel filter on it and I had the fi system serviced but I don't want to take it back to him because he's expensive.

Sounds like the cold start valve, or vacuum leak in the circuit. Common with older FI VW. It can be cured, you just need the right mechanic.
