He guys I finally got my 1984 GLI Jetta, not bad shape over all. Got it for $550 cert with new struts, exhaust and clutch. I will be looking for some of the most and commonly done upgrades. I know it needs a shifter now so the short throw would be great. As I'm fairly new here I would love some feedback and ideas. This is what I know about the car now:
MFG Date 12/83 2 Door 5 speed and 1.8 I think GLI I believe as it says GLI on it and has the black plastic insert between the tails. Under the hood says Family-GTI CDN Silver missing skirts and one fend flare. Square Head Lights and runs like a top Thanks guys I will take some pic later. Cheers |

The 2 door sedans make great track / autocross cars - they had the stiffest design of all MK1's - being that it's an '84 GLI I'd probably keep it as stock looking as possible (they're not that common a bird) - but a nice set of 14 or 15" factory alloys, maybe a little bit of a drop (they always appeared "nose high" to me) - Euro bumpers - the little things can really make a car like yours stand out -
You might want to try replacing the OEM shift bushings and linkages - typically they wear out and leave you with sloppy shifting - if you do install a short shifter make sure you replace all the shifter busings as well - and line everything up correctly - you don't want the nickname "crunch" - especially if its origin is you gearbox!
