Default MK 1 1.4i

I have this kinda prob on where I took the normal box filter off, then put a cone filter on, but the first filter that I put on was made out of sponge. When u rub ur hand over the filter the sponge kinda disintergrated. Previous driving with that filter the car stalled, then didn't want to start again, so I had to pull start the car again. Then I put the original filter back on.
Later I bought a Simota cone filter, but the paper/cardboard one and had no problems up until it rains very hard then the car stalls, because the filter allowed too much water in.
My problem really is that when the car idles, its idles constant, but irregular @ times. Driving in a low gear @ a slow pace the car sometimes jerks and when I put the clutch in the eliminate that then the revs shoot to like 2000rpm
Could it be that the first filter maybe stuffed up the fuel injectors or the throttle bodies r dirty??
I took it for a service and on the computer it said something like airflow not regulated, somrthing to that effect, but it showed an error on the pc. Something wrong with the throttle body or something.
Thanx

Are there any vacuum lines or hoses that connect to the filter housing?

Factory filter housing and K&N panel filter has done me right in many cars I've owned.
