Default more questions about engines

ok so today i walk into this little repair shop near my school that my dad is friends with the owner. he says nice car i said thanks.

next he tells yea i got this high proformance motor sitting at my house do you want it. i asked what makes it high proformance he said i dont know it was at SIR and the car spun the motor so they just left it so we took it. he said the bottom end probably isnt that good but it has a high proformance head that is still good.

so i go to my work tell the guy about this motor and he asked what makes it hi. pro. so i told him the same thing he said why dont we rebuild the whole thing so you start off with a brand new motor and you know the parts that are in it.

i asked well how much do you think it would cost he said around 500. i know i can get the money and me and him could put it all together but where to get the parts.

aaron i was on your website and saw these sites
http://www.bildon.com/
http://www.bertilsengines.com/

the stuff seems expensive. now i have never looked at prices for parts like these so i dont know but that kind of blows the 500 dollar price range out of the water.

is there a place to get cheaper parts.

also what does it mean when you spin the motor i take it probably the same thing as spinning a bearing but i dont know what that is either.

oh and if anyone else didnt notice i change my mind a lot and it pisses me off

Prices for engine internals are never really cheap. A few places offer some parts for less, but it all depends on what you are really looking for. You should figure out EXACTLY what makes this motor he has so special, and EXACTLY what is wrong with it.

Most people don't leave a motor with good parts just laying there. Starting off with a known good core helps. Was is an 8v or what?

yea the motor is a carbed 8v. i was thinking the same thing about how someone just left it there.

but like i said i still cant make up my mind on what i want to do cuz i dont think this built 8v is going to work on my buget after looking at the prices but i still just like to know the option.

do you think if i took the head apart i would be able i would beable to tell what was done to it

i still like the idea of the turbo diesel.

aaron like you were saying in the other post the 8v bottom ends are built like tanks so i dont think i would need to rebuild the entire engine

i see that you used to have a turbo diesel that you gave to your friend does he still have it and if so would he sell the turbo and the manifold

sorry about asking all these questions but really i just want to cover all the bases

If you pull the head you can measure the valve heads, and check for portwork and tapered valve guides. You should be able to find numbers on the tops of the pistons which indicate the bore as well. Also check the end of the cam for engraved numbers which would be specs, grind number, or manufacturer of an aftermarket cam.

The turbo diesel stuff has changed hands a couple times and came back to me finally. It's going on my truck.

VW bottom ends in general are tough, but like any motor they do wear out, and running out of oil will damage them.

Bearing turns in the rod or block, or makes bad contact and galls. Usually it doesn't mean good things for anything inside the motor.

if it's a carbed 8V motor and all the linkage for the carbs is there along with the manifold and what not the head and carb set-up alone is worth at least 1K. I have a carb set up for my rabbit and i have about 1200 into the carbs/manifold/linkage....food for thought
