Default My Diesel Caddy "retired" on me...again.

Here is the story:

While coming off Route 78, I started to shift down smoothly when the engine started to rev up like there was no tomorrow. I got it in neutral, but no results. I turned off the ignition and the engine kept going on for about 10 seconds.
I could not get it going; I would turn the key, and all I heard was a "clunk" sound. I was not turning over.
Once I got it back home (and ripped off by local Summit, NJ towing service), we opened the engine and found some oil in one of the cylinder chambers and in the intake manifold.
The head gasket looked like it was not installed properly; it was a bit loose in a couple of corners. The engine turns over manually.
I was told that is not uncommon for a diesel engine to "run away"; running on oil fumes and burning a bit more oil.
Howeve,r nobody can pin point the cause. I am fairly new at this d.i.y. scene, so I am almost clueless. Someone told that it could have a worn bore and piston rings.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks!
