Default Oil capacity of 1979 Diesel Rabbit

Hello, I'm a brand new owner of a 1979 Rabbit Diesel as of 5pm yesterday.

I just dropped the oil and am ready to put in new, and can't find out the capacity. Nothing is referenced in the owners manual, and there is no indication in the engine compartment.

If anyone could chime in and let me know, I'd appreciate it.

By the way, I'm thrilled to be here and hope to learn and contribute a lot.

Thanks,

Curt

4.2 quarts comes to mind - but I'd be cautious when it comes to my memory - spin on a new filter, dump in 4 quarts, start the car, shut it off and check the level - add as needed.

buta 79 may have the smaller oil pan since it should be a 1.5

The manual says 4.2 quarts, But don't just dump in that much! If you are changing the oil and putting on a new filter, Let the oil drain for about a hour or if its one drip a minute. Add 3 quarts of oil. Start your engine and let idle about 45 seconds (don't rev) shut it off and wait about 5 minutes. Check your level. Very slowly add some more oil until it is exactly inbetween the two middle marks. Then you are good to go.
