Default Rabbit engine codes

I was wondering if anyone knows where to find info about engine codes. I just got a '79 but want to make sure of the motor and trans by checking the codes and serial numbers.

I appreciate any pointers.

Dustin

what are the first two numbers/letters on the block and trans?

Trans will be located on the bottom of the bellhousing, engine on the flat surface on the front of the block just below the head surface.

site that has engine codes with specs of engine:

http://home.planet.nl/~koni1691/ecodes.html <<<<=====

big list, i have a '79 1.5 liter with engine code "EH" chances are if its a '79 the code will start with an "E" you'll have to scroll down a bit on the site but its records are accurate to my knowledge.....

also i've found that they may have a liter marking on the head, however this doeasn't mean that your block is that liter engine... for example mine is a 1.5 liter block with a 1.6 marked head..... the head is original and came from vw factory that way, there is no differance in the head... this doesn't apply to the later rabbits.

1.7s also had the 1.6 mark on the head. You'll find that there's a number on the back of the block. 1.6 says 1.6, diesel says 1.6D, 1.7 says H (except the VW 1.7s in Dodge Omnis, which say 1.7), 1.8 says 1.8, and 2.0 says 2.0.

ETKA has a full list of VW engine codes with HP figures, models the engine was used in and year ranges for each... all of them... ever. And Euro ETKA covers the european motors soo. Give me an engine code, I can tell you what it is, HP, and what it came in.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Here is what I found after a quick look. I hope it is the right info.

On the front of the block is either 28E or 2BE.

I have two transmissions, the one in the car is a F0. The other is supposedly a race tranny and is a FN.

I will look at the link and see if I can find anything.

We want to set this car up as a autocross/rallycross car. It also has a full cage welded in.

OK, finally found the engine code. It was under a ton of grease and grim.

It is a 1.8 from 85 or 86 Jetta.

Having problems with the idling. Runs fine when you start it but as soon as you hit the throttle it won't ilde just dies right down. You can keep it running by keeping in the throttle but as soon as you let it go it will rev down and die.

Thanks for any pointers.

Dustin

I only have three points of connection for the vacuum. Replaced all the hoses on those. Doesn't seem to be generating to much vacuum and doesn't do anything different if you unplug one of the hoses.

How about air/fuel mixture. It has the old CIS injection with no computer.

It has the EGR valve removed as well.

Thanks
