Default Shifting Problems!!!

Just bought myself an 82 Rabbit, and have a problem with shifting. When the vehicle is not running the car shifts perfect, but when running it stays stuck in gears and hardly ever shifts. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? Clutch? Transmission? Something else?

PS. Didn't know there was such a huge community for VW'ers! Great stuff!

Low on gear oil, bad gear oil, bad syncros... they can all cause the problems you're having.

I was wrong. I checked the rabbit out again today, and the trany's stick moves through every gear with the car running or without running. No matter what gear the shifter is in, the trany stays in reverse. I can however drive in reverse perfectly so I guess the clutch is good. Anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.

oh goodie. pop the hood and start looking at the shift linkages. Something has come undone.

I was hoping thats all it would be. I really didn't want the trany to be the problem. I was also told by another person to take off one of the linkages and try and shift the trany by hand. If it shifts gears then its the shifter linkage thats either bent mal-adjusted or broken. Correct? If it is then you have any idea how much that part would run me? if this turns out good then I will be so darn happy! I'll take some pics soon and post them here with the amount i purchased the vehicle for. I think you guys will be amazed! happy happy happy! thanks again.

I just replaced some parts on my g/f's rabbit, two bushing on the shift relay lever (the small one nearest the tranny) wore out. Still need to check the fluid level because first is still kind of tuff to get into sometimes and I am pretty sure it has a small leak.

If the synchros are smoked then it wont like to shift no matter what condition the shift bushings and other parts are in. My girlfriends car is suffering this right now. It will shift perfectly until you get it moving.

Once this has happened your choice is either a trans rebuilt or just replacing the trans to fix it since you can't undo the damage by filling it back up with gear oil.

Dead syncros, worn out gear oil. Sounds like when it gets warm it goes to crap, which is usually a gear oil issue.
