Default Thermostat or Fan

I know this will be easy for all of you VW engine junkies.
Problem: 1981 Rabbit diesel L. Overheats after 20 min. or so. Fan does not turn on. some.
Is it the thermostat or electric fan? thanks so much. ray

Default Thermostat or Fan

I had this problem with my 84 GTI. I did two things: i replaced the thermostat and the fan switch. Most of the time it is the fan switch that is burnt out but it is always good to replace the thermostat as well.

Default Thermostat or Fan

My fan comes on even after the car is cool. Right now I'm taking the fuse out to stop it. Does this sound like a thermostat problem?

In case you're wondering, it was the Thermoswitch for the Cooling Fan.
