Default Universal Gas Tank??

Hi all, I'm new here and glad to make the acquaintance of so many who share the obsession of VW's. I have an 83 (ordered new and patiently waited for it) Rabbit GTI . Its got to have close to 300,00 on it but have had to change the speedo a few times. It started burnning out fuel pumps and we finally tracked the problem to a clogged rusted gas tank. I made the misteak of ordering 1 on line that is missing the fitting for the small hose that goes to the gravity valve. The larger outlet for the hose to theneck of the fuel filler hose is there though. My friend says we can just put a T fitting between these two hoses as they just handle vapor. Can anyone second this?? lol...Thanks for any input!

I'm not currently holding a fuel tank in my hands but the T fitting idea doesn't sound quite right to me. I think you'd end up with fuel pushing through the gravity valve and into the charcoal canister. I could be wrong though.

I've done a couple tank swaps for this reason and I usually find it easier to find a good condition used fuel tank. Yours will need to be from an '81-'84 MK1.

I find its best not to blow yourself up I know what you mean tho messing with fuel tanks is scary lol. I like the fuel hatch under the back seat tho, its good for allowing petrol fumes into the car
