i'm new to the vw world. i got a great deal on an 84 golf gti 2-door. i've had it amonth or so and its been pretty good to me..if you dont count the starter dying and the ignition switch acting funny. i was under the impression i had a mk2. over a few drinks a buddy told me it was a mk. so how do i tell? i remeber hearing that 84 was teh switch over form the mk1 to the mk2. so how do i tell for srue what i have. and having a euro spec car does it make any differance.....any help would help.

not sure if they made the switch in europe a year earlier than the US, but in the US an 84 is a MKI. However, it seems europe always get everything a year in advance so I can't say for sure.

Car on the left is a MKII, on the right is a MKI:

hmm so stil not sure. well i have the quad head lights, but my grill doesnt say gti on the front. onl;y place it says gti is on the back. but my doors are differnt from both of these cars. i have a wing window that doesnt open. and my side blinker is a small little thing, might be a euro thing. well this seems to get more intersting.... wonder if there is a number on the car anywhere that could tell me. what about interors? are they about the same from mk1 to mk2?

well, that is a later MKII, the earlier MKIIs do have vent windows. These are US spec Golfs mind you so trim is different.

here is a rear shot:
MKI on left, MKII on right:

Easy test; when you open the hatch, is the bottom edge flat all the way across? If it is, it's a Mk1.

Last MK1 for Europe = 8/83. Euro changeover is usually a year earlier than US. MK3s came out in '92 there too.

A few standout features are the number plate is attatched to the hatch, the emblems are below the tail lights, the grill and rear glass have slight curves to them.

Not much stayed the same between the two bodies. If you ever get a chance to park next to a MK1 you'll really start to get the idea.
