Default what will directly fit into a 92 cabriolet?

I am currently planning on buying a '92 cabriolet. Knowing that the stock engine doesn't have much power at all I was wondering what the best swap would be to gain hp for the cabriolet? What would be the cheapest and also the most expensive thing to do with it in regards to gaining hp? What would you guys recommend doing to it? Is it at all possible to put in a new GTI motor or a newer motor that doesn't have as many miles as the older GTI motors and corrado motors? What Audi motors would fit in it if any? Ive also heard of some subaru/honda/mazda swaps but that sounds like a nightmare. I'll look forward to receiving a response!!

cheapest/easiest:
16v 2.0liter gti engine, 16v 1.8liter gti engine either with close ratio trans both of the same genera.

most expensive/most complicated:
Built 1.8t engine runnin stand alone, Built vr6 turbo runnin stand alone.

i recommend your own personal preference, it is indeed your car.

Thanks so much for your input.
Indeed it is my car, i was wondering what my options are as i am a new vw owner/enthusiast.

Do you know of any websites or anything like that where i would be able to find the prices and other info about the motors if i was to purchase something you mentioned?

Also i have heard about people puting japanese motors into these things. I was looking into possibly puting a subaru EJ20 motor into it. Do you know how difficult would that be to swap? What is your take on this stuff?

Again thank you for your valued input. hope to hear from you again.

i think jap. engines should stay in jap. cars, i know nothing about subaru's or hondas or that crap.... keep a vw engine in it...... a 16valve 1.8 liter high compression gti engine and transmission of the same year/body style will directly fit into your car, if you are knowledged with the right tools you could swap this set-up in a couple hours(very easy) you car won't be sickly fast but it will have more power than the stock 8valve engine.... as far as parts your best bet is to go to avw salvage yard and find that engine and trans. or go to euronation.com. so many possibilities that i can;t even begin to post them, go to a magazine store and buy a eurotuner or PVW(performance vw) maybe that will give you idea's............

Default G60 in Cabriolet?

How hard would it be to swap a G60 into a '90 cabriolet? What parts and accessories would I need to add or replace?

And what would I be able to do with the G60? Would I be able to put a different head on it to make it DOHC instead of SOHC? Or make it turbo charged instead of super charged? What would be the best thing to do to a G60?

Any info would be most appreciated. Thanks for all the help.

g60s go in with out much fuss, g60 block with a cross flow head and a turbo... kinda dumb though if you're going to do that you might as well not waste your money on a g60, just get an odb1 aba turbo it and mega squirt it. and you'll be happy.

Could you go into detail about how to do that? I don't have much experience with vws yet. Thanks for the info.

a 2.0 16v would be direct fit? are you sure? Since a cabrio is still a MKI, I know the only 16v that is direct fit is a 1.8 16v Scirocco engine. The rest fit but you have to redo all the accesories and crap I hear. a 16v scirocco engine would be like pulling your engine and putting it back in, its that easy.

the op's car is a '92 so it's digi2 which makes a 16v a pain no matter what the source car. By suggestions, G60 or ABA.

2.0 16v bolts right in, pretty much every engine bolts right in until 1998 when the beetle came out, all the engines after that have the gay timing belt driven water pump and won't bolt into a mk1. oh yeah accept vr6's
