Default windshield wipers?

I recently purchased a 1981 rabbit pickup with the 1.6L diesel. This morning in the rain the passenger side wiper began to get out of time with the other one on the drivers side. This continued to get worse until now neither of the wipers are working. Is this a loose motor, causing the regulator arms to get out of time as the motor is rotating from the torque of the wiper load? Being new to the pickup is there an easy way to get to the motor? What is my best bet? Thanks in advance.
