Default 1986 jetta starting/running problem help!!

My jetta will not start on its own. I have to pull a hose off the intake and spray some carb cleaner in there and then reconnect the hose. Once started I have to keep it above 3000 rpm or else it will die. I have checked for vacuum leaks and disconnected hoses. I loosened the cold start injector connection to see if the system was holding pressure and it squirted several feet. I don't know what else to check for.

can't recall when exactly the AAV's went away - but what you're describing sounds like a stuck or disfunctional aux air valve - if you've got a bentley manual it'll describe how to remove, check, fix and re-install it - it's pretty easy (as I recall it was on the back side of the intake manual on the right side of the car - sort of a pia to get to) - it'll have an air hose (about 3/4") going to/from it and will have a two wire connector on top of it (which controls the opening / closing of the valve) - the valve should be OPEN when cold.
