Default 1990 jetta transmission question

HI I have a 1990 Jetta with an auto transmission. I am currently deployed with the Airforce and my wife called with a problem with the Jetta. It is very sluggish while driving, it seems like it is getting gas, than not getting gas and only happens in drive, not when it is at idle. I had a friend put in new plugs and spark plug wires. ANother friend who is a mechanic says it is the transmission going, can I check the fluid level or is this model and year a sealed transmission. Any other commets on the cause greatly apprecaited THanks

Should be a dipstick on the trans - I'd also suggest that someone check the car over for a vacuum leak - it's possible that the leak is causing some of the chugging - failing that I'd replace the fuel filter - again - fairly typical behavior for a clogged filter (idles fine - chugs when you try to drive) -

Doesn't sound like a transmission issue to me - but then I'm doing a diagnosis from my office and haven't seen / heard the car!

Best of luck with it - and if you're deployed where stuff blows up - keep your head down and get home safe -
