Default 1997 golf wont downshift from 4th to third

My car shift's fine except for when i try to downshift from 4th to 3rd. When i try 90% of the time it just wont go into third no matter how hard i push. The car grinds a little when i go from 2nd to 3rd but if i am carefull it makes no noise. Any ideas?

Manual tranny... over 100K miles or approaching...?

Hopefully only need to have your shift rod linkages cleaned / adjusted and / or maybe replaced. Should not be serious problem or expense but don't delay. Could result in serious / expensive damage to tranny.

Had 82 Siracocco 5-speed that same thing happened to at about 125K miles.

It's time to replace all the bushings. There are many places that carry kits to refurbish your transmission linkage from the shifter to the transmission.

Do not delay - this will cause stress on the transmission components and be more costly in the long run.
