Default 88 GTI 16v NO SPARK

ok, hello to all here! its my first post after lurking around the site for some time now....

I just bought an all origonal 88 golf gti 16v 5spd for 800$ ....problem is: the previous owner hit a big puddle last fall and stalled the car out, after a few minuites of cranking he said it eventually started and he was able to drive home. after cooling off he attempted to restart but no luck. i found 2 wires under the dash that were melted. ( i am going to fix these first ) all ofthe lights etc work and motor spins over fine just no spark at all , any ideas for me to check ( and all wires , rotor , cap, plugs and a whole lot more were replaced by the previous owner)

ANY IDEAS WOULD HELP ALOT

Use a volt meter and check for voltage at the coil and the distributor.

ok, finally got the car home and dived right in and i found many other wires that were melted and fixed them. i believe what happened was the previous owner hit the puddle , shorted the distributor out and in turn cooked the coil ( since i have no spark ) and the yellow wire coming from the top post on the coil was the main burn out culprit. i have 6.5v at that terminal with the key on. i have checked all fuses and are ok ..im wondering about relays being bad

Engine cranks right over now, but NO other things in the dash work besides the battery light. i wonder if im better off buying a new wiring harness??? any ideas? ill be buying a new coil this week.
