Default 89 jetta 1.8 swap to 2.0

just picked up this 89 jetta and would like to swap to and 2.0 anyone have any insight as to how hard this would be and what parts that are needed. I know where i can get a whole front clip of an mk3 just curious if it is a lot of trouble and if it is worth it. Becasue a friend of mine siad that this is a ce1 box instead of ce2. Thanks guys

it's not as easy on a ce1 car as ce2 but it's still not overly complicated...basically need to get power/ground to the ecm, and if your swaping the cluster you'll have to splice the wires together and so on. you can figure it out if you have the bently for both cars side by side for comparison.

The car I have access to is is a 97 golf. Of course OBD II. Is that much harder than OBD I besides changing the ecm? OrI can just wait and try to find a OBD I. Thanks Guys

OBD1 is a bit easier. Earlier OBD2 isn't all that bad. It still breaks down to a small handful of wires that need to be connected. I prefer OBD1 because the engines are better (better crank, better valve springs, dumber ECU) and the wiring is simple.

Yes, all 4 cyl vw transmissions and engines bolt together. The only differences are the clutch/pressure plate/ flywheel set up. If your engine comes with clutch assembly you will probably need to swap the clutch disc for a small spline clutch disc to mate up with your transmission though. Swap is real easy in Ce-2. I ran obd-1, they are a little harder to find now that people know about the forged bottom end but they are still available and cheap. Wait for it and convert your car to CE-2, that will make it plug and play and finding a ce-2 harness will be very easy. Converting should only take you half a day.

89 should be ce2, look on you motor, does it have plastic or metal water outlets, do the sensore have the horse shoe clips or do they thread in, ce2 uses the clips, on you guage cluster, is it one or two plugs, ce2 has one, ce1 has 2, one one each side of the cluster
